Emulating a Professional Photographer

Writer's picture: chloeilcchloeilc

Part 1:

My most successful image is this mirror picture of myself, emulating Lee Friedlander's self-portrait. First, I got to use the mirror technique, showing myself, which came off as a more modern version of Friedlander's photo as I am using an iPhone, whereas he used a traditional camera. Another reason this is my strongest image is because I got to incorporate lighting creatively. The Christmas tree on my left gives the composition contrast, similar to Friendlander's with the light bulb. The twinkling lights on the tree also make the picture seem magical. The last reason I believe this image is my strongest photograph is the different layers leading to much depth. The forefront of the image is the phone, then myself, then the Christmas tree, and in the back are the stockings. Visually, it gives the viewer a lot to look at. The most challenging aspect of this assignment was finding a photographer that it was possible to emulate, as many photographers I like choose to photograph social projects. In the future, to create stronger images, I will add different effects to the photos to make them more visually appealing.

Part 2:

"Your image of the flower is really clear and interesting. I like the amount of depth that the image gives, even though the picture was taken up very close. I also like the stark contrast of the flower's white against the dark black background. Overall the image has a melancholy feel with the black and white composition."

Your photo in the mirror is so pretty and is perfect for the holiday season. One thing that strikes me about your image is the twinkling lights from the tree. It shows how you used and thought about lighting and what that lighting would do for the success of your photo. The use of black and white in your photo pushes the viewer to imagine all of the colors that are present and creates a feeling of wonder, which again, is perfect for the holiday season. This was an interesting way of emulating your chosen photograher and it came out great!
